Čezeta, the retro electric scooter

This old Czech brand is trying a comeback, with an original design from the 50’s associated with a modern electric drive train.

Čezeta has been resurrected as a non-profit enterprise, with all eventual profits going to promote electric mobility and fund engineering schools in Prague. Its ambition is to market a new electric scooter, the Type 506, based on two old models from the 1950’s, the Type 501 and 502. Powered by a 150cc 2-stroke engine, over 115,000 of them were sold well into the ‘60s. Their space-age design was typical from the era, and gives the Type 506 an original retro look.

The first prototypes of the Type 506 are actually refurbished Type 502. The production model will have a monocoque shell made from carbon fiber instead of steel, and is powered by a 5kW electric motor. With a 4.8kWh lithium battery, the Type 506 has a range of 80 km (50 miles). An optional regenerative braking system should add about 10% to the range, and top speed is 80 km/h (50 mph).

You can pre-order this electric scooter on Čezeta’s web site with US delivery “by container to sea ports in Los Angeles and New York”. The company is working on a first series of 100 vehicles. Prices start at €9,450 ($12,250), and the color choices are red, blue or black.

The original Type 502 came with a trailer, the PAV. Čezeta is working on adapting it for the Type 506, by having it carry a solar-powered-charged 3.8kWh battery pack, thereby increasing the range to approximately 150 km (93 miles).

The Čezeta certainly has a retro charm, and its non-profit status makes it rather unique. Let’s hope they succeed!
