The Johammer J1: electric scooter or motorcycle?
The Johammer J1 looks rather original and seems to be a cross between a motorcycle and a scooter, yet has a certain futuristic charm.
The J-1 offers also some interesting technological innovations: an aluminum frame, an 11 kW motor integrated in the rear wheel, and a front wheel with hub center steering and a double wishbone suspension. It comes in two different versions. The cheaper model, at $32,000 and a weight of 350 lbs., has an 8.3 kWh lithium battery with a range of 93 miles. The top model has a 12.7 kWh battery and a range of 125 miles, with a weight of 392 lbs. and a price of $35,000. Both versions have a maximum speed of 75 mph. The side mirrors integrate a high-resolution color display showing speed and other technical info.
The J1 creator in Austria, Johann Hammer Schmidt, claims to have developed a battery pack with a very high power density and a very low weight-to-power ratio: 5,2 kg (11.5lbs.) per kWh. All this makes the J1 a rather interesting product. For now there are few details on European distribution, and no indication of a future US availability.
The product is interesting but the design is too “special” for me… I won’t buy it.
It looks like a peanut!
