Welcome, Lightning!

Lightning Motorcycles delivers the first of its LS-218 electric superbike to a paying customer.

We have been waiting for a long time, so let’s enjoy the moment. Let’s be positive and think that this is the beginning of Lightning Motorcycles becoming a successful manufacturer of electric motorcycles.

Alas, for now, the “world’s fastest production motorcycle” is only build to order, at $38,888 a piece. Which makes Lightning’s stated goal of imitating Tesla and using the profits from the LS-218 to develop a range of electric motorcycles somehow dubious. There will be no profits without a real manufacturing process and worldwide distribution.

So a lot of questions remain: when will the next LS-218 be delivered to a paying customer? What will the production level be in 2015? When will international distribution start? And does Lightning Motorcycles have the financing needed to survive until the firm becomes profitable?

Still, we have now one more electric motorcycle to choose from in the US, where Lightning is competing with Zero, Brammo and Lito. And the more, the merrier!
