The electric scooter market in France

It is difficult to get sales figures for electric two-wheel vehicles in the USA, so it it interesting to look at the sales of 50cc-equivalent electric scooters in France for the first 4 months of 2014.

No surprise, sales of electric scooters are rather low: in a market for 50cc scooters in regression by 8.9% to 22,698 units, only 195 electric scooters were sold during the first 4 months of 2014 (-15.6%), for a market share of .7%. It is sadly a good illustration of the state of the market. The Yamaha EC-03 is the leader with 43 units (if you add the sales of MBK which sells a rebadged version of the EC-03). Matra sold 43 e-MO and Peugeot 21 e-Vivacity. Top 10 of 50cc-equivalent electric scooters sold in France in the first 4 months of 2014:

1) Matra e-MO : 44

2) Ebladet ES 16 : 34

3) Yamaha EC-03 : 25

4) MBK ED-06 : 22

5) Peugeot E-Vivacity : 21

6) Ride Sunday : 8

7) Veleance Tri Ode : 7

8) Sky Team 202 : 4

8) BHM Nitro : 4

10) Kreidler 50 : 3

It would be interesting to know the sales of 125cc-equivalent scooters, like the models from Govecs and Eccity. French proponents of electric scooters explain these low numbers by the lack to government incentives (contrary to the 6,400 euros incentive on electric cars), the lack of a real charging network, the range limitation of today’s batteries and high prices.

These numbers need to be put into context though: electric car sales in France represented only .35% of total car sales for the first 4 months of 2014, despite well known models from large car manufacturers like Renault, Nissan, VW, BMW, etc.

Patience, patience…
